A covered area with eighty-six striated columns inspired in the Doric order and crowned by an entablature that also incorporates shapes taken from classical styles. The steps start from the entrance square, framend by two convex walls with merlons, with a shelter beside a conical column on the right-hand side. It is a double flight of steps divided into sections that ascends to the Hypostyle Room or Columns Room, beneath which is a tank that feeds the springs on its central axis. A highly Gaudian iron gate leads into the gardens of the former farmhouse, the Casa Larrard. We find a portico, backing onto the retaining wall of the upper roadway, made from unhewn stone and adopting the profile of a huge wave. To its exterior is a whole series of buttresses, one of which depicts a rough caryatid known as the Washerwoman, because it shows a woman with the tools of that trade. BUY TICKETS MONUMENTAL CORE
F - austria gardens (Area)
This was one of the zones of the residential estate that was meant to be divided into plots for houses but was instead occupied by a municipal plant nursery when Barcelona City Council opened the park to the public in 1926. The Portico of the Washerwoman ends in a spiral ramp with helicoidal columns showing great formal boldness. The Casa Larrard, situated below, formed part of the land acquired to build Park Güell. Gaudí only retouched it a little to make it into the residence of Eusebi Güell and his family.
